The Smart Hospitals Toolkit aims to support health care facilities in becoming climate-smart and resilient to climate change by reducing vulnerability to natural hazards, ensuring operational continuity and lowering carbon and environmental footprints. To aid in planning, designing, operating and retrofitting safer and greener health care facilities, the toolkit includes:
- Key instruments that combine disaster safety with environmentally sustainable operations, such as the Hospital Safety Index, the Green Guide and Checklist, and the Baseline Assessment;
- Practical guidance on water and energy conservation, indoor environmental quality, waste reduction, sustainable construction and climate‑adaptation strategies;
- Policy frameworks;
- Cost‑benefit analysis tools;
- Capacity‑building approaches.
The Toolkit has a focus on the Caribbean Region, but can also be useful to facilities in similar contexts globally.
