The Adaptation Fund was established under the Kyoto Protocol of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and finances projects and programmes that help vulnerable communities in developing countries adapt to climate change.
Since 2010, it has committed USD$998 million to adaptation projects and programmes across almost 100 countries.
To apply for project and programme funding, countries must submit proposals through an accredited institution. There are three categories of accredited institutions:
- National Implementing Entities (NIEs)
- Regional Implementing Entities (RIEs)
- Multilateral Implementing Entities (MIEs)
National implementing entities fall under the Adaptation Fund’s Direct Access modality, which enables entities to directly access financing.
Please see the Adaptation Fund website for further information about eligibility.
Intended users
NIEs, RIEs, MIEs who would like to submit a funding proposal for Climate Change and Health. Other entities who would like to apply for accreditation to the Adaptation Fund to access climate financing for health.
