United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

UNFPA recognizes that the effects of climate change pose a serious threat to eradicating preventable maternal deaths, meeting the demand for family planning, and abolishing gender-based violence and harmful practices. The environmental shifts and their subsequent challenges will potentially hinder the progress we collectively aim to make in these vital areas. Further to the success of our recent collaboration with ATACH and WHO colleagues to convene multiple impactful side events at COP28 in Dubai and COP29 in Baku, UNFPA joins this coalition of transformative partners on climate resilient health systems

Supporting the following commitments:

  • Commitment 1: Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
  • Commitment 2: Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
  • Commitment 3: Use the V&A and HNAP to facilitate access to climate change funding for health.

Country experience:

Bangladesh: Commitments 2 & 3
Kenya: Commitments 1 & 3
South Sudan: Commitments 1 & 3
Madagascar: Commitments 1 & 3
Mozambique: Commitments 1 & 3
