United for Global Mental Health is an international civil society organization advocating for policy change and increased investment for mental health across the world so that everyone, everywhere has someone to turn to in support of their mental health.
In the context of climate change and mental health, we are advocating for mental health to be integrated across actions to respond to climate and environmental threats.
In particular, we are working to ensure that:
- (i) Data, evidence, and awareness of the impact of climate change and environmental degradation on mental health increases, especially amongst key policymakers and policy actors.
- (ii) More governments and other relevant stakeholders (e.g., NGOs) include mental health as an integral part of addressing climate and environmental threats (e.g., in adaptation, mitigation, and loss and damage policies).
- (iii) Mental health is considered for integration within climate and environment financing plans.
- (iv) Mental health receives increased attention at key climate and environment moments in a way that reflects the priorities of communities most affected and people with lived experience.
Supporting the following commitments:
- Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
- Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
Country experience:
The mandate of United for Global Mental Health is, by design, global in nature. However, we support multiple partners at the national level on work concerning climate change and mental health.
