Sustainable Healthcare Coalition

The Sustainable Healthcare Coalition is a collaboration between the private and public health systems and supplier companies that engages and connects with a range of players internationally to accelerate and amplify action on net zero healthcare. 
The Coalition is a vehicle for pre-competitive research and development of approaches to healthcare decarbonisation and to provide information exchange across private and public sector actors in healthcare to engage and deploy the learnings generated. Its specific aim is to aid understanding and foster action to address the sustainability issues facing healthcare, through open dialogue and collaborative action. 
Our focus is on measuring impact and, by providing practical tools for change, fostering innovation. The Coalition developed and published a world-first standard for carbon footprinting pharmaceutical and medical device products, alongside methods and guidance for assessing the environmental impacts of care pathways and clinical trials.  

Supporting the following commitments:

• Commitment 1: Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
• Commitment 2: Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
• Commitment 3: Use the V&A and HNAP to facilitate access to climate change funding for health.
• Commitment 4: Set a target date by which to achieve health systems net zero emissions (ideally by 2050).
• Commitment 5: Deliver a baseline assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of the health system (including supply chains).
• Commitment 6: Develop an action plan or roadmap by a set date to develop a sustainable low carbon health system (including supply chains).
