Pacific Society of Anaesthetists (PSA)
The Pacific Society of Anaesthetists (PSA) is a not-for-profit organisation representing physician anaesthesia providers across 11 South Pacific countries. Although sustainability and climate action are not yet core strengths of the PSA, we are committed to learning and sharing experiences with colleagues in the ATACH community. In our resource-constrained region, practices such reusing equipment, using cotton drapes and omitting sterile gowns for selected anaesthesia procedures are often necessary rather than optional. As a result, some aspects of our practice are inherently sustainable. Greater access to global expertise, peer support for policy development, technical guidance, and financial literacy will be essential to embedding sustainable practice in our region.
Supporting the following commitments:
- Commitment 1: Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
- Commitment 2: Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
- Commitment 3: Use the V&A and HNAP to facilitate access to climate change funding for health.
- Commitment 5: Deliver a baseline assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of the health system (including supply chains).
- Commitment 6: Develop an action plan or roadmap by a set date to develop a sustainable low carbon health system (including supply chains).
