Humanity & Inclusion/Handicap International (HI) is an independent and impartial aid organisation working in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. HI works alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations in their diversity to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote human rights. HI was founded in 1982 and today it operates in over sixty countries.
In addition to de-carbonize humanitarian operations and to be engaged for disaster risk reduction, HI adopts the emerging public health paradigm of Planetary Health to tackle the environment-health nexus against health inequities.
Persons with disabilities are likely to experience health complications due to climate crisis’ consequences that are unique to their disability and detrimental to their health, including loss or damage of assistive products that are essential for their functioning, or disrupted access to both mainstream and specialized health care.
HI deliberately aims joint benefits for health and climate in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights-SRHR, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support-MHPSS, Rehabilitation, and Inclusive Health to ensure the Human Right to a to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment without any discrimination. This includes Nature Based Solutions for health and inclusive and resilient health system strengthening.
Supporting the following commitments:
- Commitment 1: Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
- Commitment 2: Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
