The Centre for Sustainable Healthcare (CSH) has been working for 15 years to support the health system in the UK and some European countries to become more sustainable. CSH has learnt about which models for change work best and have developed tools, frameworks and educational materials to support change. Many of these are transferable to other countries; CSH would like to share as much as they can, while also recognizing the need to understand much from other countries. CSH has expertise in whole-system change including a focus on prevention, patient-centred care, lean pathways and low carbon alternatives.
The team at CSH has experience in carbon footprinting, in embedding sustainability into medical curriculum, into clinical practice, into health service commissioning and guidelines. They also have experience of research, of sustainable quality improvement and of working with all types of healthcare professionals and patient groups through different medical specialties. They have substantial experience in running competitions and training at national and regional levels for all levels of health workforce.
Supporting the following commitments:
- Set a target date by which to achieve health systems net zero emissions (ideally by 2050).
- Deliver a baseline assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of the health system (including supply chains).
- Develop an action plan or roadmap by a set date to develop a sustainable low carbon health system (including supply chains).
Country experience:
UK: Commitments 5 and 6 (part of the system, working with different specialties)
Global (across several countries): Commitments 5 and 6 (partial - working with particular specialties)
