AIIB supports sustainable economic development, regional connectivity and finances Infrastructure for Tomorrow. AIIB recognizes that health, infrastructure, climate, nature and sustainable economic development are closely interconnected.
The Bank has financed sustainable health infrastructure improving equitable access to quality health services that are responsive to gender-specific health concerns and health impacts of climate change. AIIB has also supported infrastructure projects with major public health benefits, such as water and sanitation systems, waste management infrastructure and clean energy. Through these initiatives, AIIB has gained practical experience and insights into how its mission and thematic priorities can add value to the health needs of its Members.
AIIB will release its Asian Infrastructure Finance report for 2024, focused on infrastructure for planetary health. By investing in nature as infrastructure and integrating health considerations into infrastructure development, AIIB aims to safeguard human health, promote sustainable development, and achieve planetary health. AIIB’s Health Strategy that will come out in 2025 focuses on strengthening partnerships and collaboration aiming to reduce health disparities, ensure equitable access to health services, and prepare for emerging health threats. It also emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to infrastructure investment, considering health, climate mitigation, adaptation, and nature-based solutions.
Supporting the following commitments
- Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
- Use the V&A and HNAP to facilitate access to climate change funding for health.
As AIIB now has a climate policy based financing instrument, it could potentially support on using the V&A and HNAP to facilitate access to climate change funding for health, depending on the resulting infrastructure investment.
