Australia to co-convene global climate and health alliance
Prof. Zoe Wainer, photo credit: CDC Australia will join the Republic of Türkiye as co-convenor of the Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH), strengthening its global leadership on climate and health ahead of COP31.
The role will see Australia help guide ATACH’s work to support countries to build climate-resilient, low-carbon and sustainable health systems.
Director-General of the Australian Centre for Disease Control, Professor Zoe Wainer, welcomed the announcement. “Australia is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Through this role, we will help bridge the gap between global commitments and real-world progress in protecting health from climate impacts,” said Professor Wainer.
Australia has been an active ATACH member since 2023, when the Australian Government released the National Health and Climate Strategy.
COP31 will be held in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 20 November, with Australia serving as President of Negotiations.
One of COP31’s 10 priority themes is Dynamic and Resilient Health Systems, aligning with ATACH’s focus on practical action to protect health in a changing climate.
