Webinar: Integrating air pollution into nationally determined contributions (NDCs): insights from country action and collaboration

Every year around 7 million people globally die due to exposure to air pollution, the vast majority in low- and middle-income countries. While air pollution is acknowledged as a challenge by many governments, especially given increasing public pressure for action and the significant impacts on health, labour productivity, and economic growth, many have been unable to tackle its multiple drivers effectively.

In 2025, with support of the Clean Air Fund and in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme's flagslip Climate Promise initiative, UNDP is supporting countries to integrate air pollution, black carbon, and other super pollutants into the nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement. The aim is to build awareness of the linkages between climate change, air pollution and health, and work with countries to develop measurable and meaningful NDC activities that can reduce air pollution/black carbon and protect population health. NDCs are the primary means for countries to coordinate emissions reduction and protect populations from the worst impacts of climate change, and integrating air pollution will have significant co-benefits for climate and air quality.  NDCs can also serve as national investment and development plans, and help countries transition to greener, healthier, and more sustainable development.

This webinar will be oriented to government representatives, UN partners, and civil society with the aim to influence countries that are still working on their NDC by highlighting why air pollution and super pollutants should be integrated, and how a south-south learning approach can facilitate the development of NDCs addressing air pollution.

Learning objectives include:

  • To highlight opportunities for addressing air pollution as a health, economic, development and climate change challenge;
  • To learn about the benefits of including air quality and super pollutants in the NDCs 3.0;
  • To surface strategic partnership across stakeholders and sectors for NDC inclusion; and
  • To facilitate country exchanges on addressing air pollution and climate change together, including approaches and lessons, as well as how stronger South-South collaboration can drive ambition.
