Nurses Across the Borders Humanitarian Initiative (NABHI) is an international charitable NGO founded in 1999, with UN ECOSOC Special Consultative Status and Observer Status with the UNFCCC—the first Nigerian NGO to attain the latter. NABHI mobilises a global network of nurses and health professionals to strengthen climate-resilient health systems and community-based adaptation.
Aligned with the COP26 Health Programme Commitments, NABHI holds MOUs with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to build workforce capacity on climate-related health risks, strengthen surveillance and data collection, and promote low-carbon, sustainable clinical practice. We deliver climate-health vulnerability assessment training, early warning dissemination, and marine pathogen surveillance in vulnerable coastal regions. NABHI also serves on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) National Technical Committee and its GreenVoyage 2050 project Committee. In addition, NABHI has an MOU with the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Warri (FUPRE) as Technical Partner. These collaborations enable integrated climate-health, maritime decarbonisation, and environmental health technical support, translating national adaptation commitments into measurable community resilience and climate-informed emergency preparedness.
Supporting the following commitments:
Commitment 1: Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
Commitment 2: Develop a health national adaptation plan (HNAP) informed by the health V&A, which forms part of the National Adaptation Plan.
