Ecology and Development Foundation (ECODES)
The Ecology and Development Foundation (ECODES) is a private non-profit organisation that has been working for 30 years to enlist support among citizens, civil society organisations, companies and public administrations. Our objective is to accelerate the transition towards a carbon neutral, inclusive, responsible and circular economy, framed in a new governance, through innovation and the creation of alliances.
ECODES is the technical secretariat of Sanidad #PorElClima, the initiative that aims to mobilise all actors in the health sector to act against climate change and achieve emission neutrality by 2050 in Spain. It offers tools for healthcare centres to reduce their carbon footprint and show positive actions to improve the health of people and the planet.
At ECODES, we see the fight against climate change as an urgent priority for the protection of public health, we highlight the health co-benefits of climate action, we consider it essential to include health in all policies, we promote the development of sustainable, climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems and we support the Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain to turn international commitments into concrete actions.
Supporting the following commitments:
- Set a target date by which to achieve health systems net zero emissions (ideally by 2050).
- Deliver a baseline assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of the health system (including supply chains).
- Develop an action plan or roadmap by a set date to develop a sustainable low carbon health system (including supply chains).
Country experience:
Spain: Commitments 4, 5 and 6.
