Alga Nueva Margarita Project

The Alga Nueva Margarita Project is dedicated to the sustainable cultivation and processing of seaweed, with a core mission centered on environmental restoration, community empowerment, and climate resilience. Our technical expertise lies in the intersection of regenerative aquaculture, ecosystem services, and rural economic development. We provide on-the-ground support for nature-based solutions that directly address climate change impacts, a key determinant of health.

Our work is relevant to the CoP26 Health Programme by offering expertise in developing sustainable, low-carbon supply chains (Commitment 5 and 6) and building community-level resilience. We implement projects that restore marine ecosystems, which buffer coastal communities against climate hazards, and create livelihoods that reduce vulnerability. Our approach generates data on carbon sequestration and biodiversity, which can be integrated into health vulnerability assessments (Commitment 1). By strengthening local food systems and economic stability, we support the fundamental social determinants of health, making communities more resilient to climate shocks. We are prepared to share our models for sustainable development and climate adaptation that contribute to building robust, climate-ready health systems and communities.

Supporting the following commitments:

• Commitment 1: Conduct climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessments (V&As) at population level and/or health care facility level.
• Commitment 4: Set a target date by which to achieve health systems net zero emissions (ideally by 2050).
• Commitment 5: Deliver a baseline assessment of greenhouse gas emissions of the health system (including supply chains).
