Practical case study library launched!

The Alliance for Transformative Action on Climate and Health (ATACH) has launched a new library of case studies that provide practical guidance for health systems to get started on building climate resilience and/or low carbon sustainability.

Drawing from successful experiences of ATACH members and partners, the new library showcases real examples of “first wins” achieved by health systems in building climate resilience and/or low carbon sustainability. These examples show that many actions are already possible for health systems worldwide and are winning opportunities to improve health systems and population health.

The new library aims to support countries in implementing the Operational Framework for Building Climate Resilient and Low Carbon Health Systems. Case studies show how key components of the framework can be implemented in practice, through examples of real interventions implemented in health systems around the world. Case studies also highlight the multiple benefits associated with interventions that build climate resilience and low carbon sustainability in the health sector, along with practical lessons learnt to help other health systems get started in their implementation and reap maximal benefits.

The initial case studies showcase the following interventions:

  • Developing a national strategy for a low carbon sustainable health system

  • Developing capacity building and support programs on climate adaptation and mitigation

  • Reducing supplier driven emissions

  • Integrating sustainability into quality improvement

  • Reducing pollution from inhalational anesthetics

  • Optimizing the use of inhalers

  • Developing a national monitoring dashboard

More case studies, including experiences from low- and middle-income countries, will be added to this library in the coming months.
